United States Capitol subway system

The Congressional Subway is a subway underneath the Capitol complex, the three lines in the Capitol in Washington, DC connects with its office buildings. Up to the attacks of 11 September 2001, it was open to the public, since they are allowed for security reasons only members of Congress who use their visitors and employees of Congress.

From the south wing, the side of the House, rides a train with train drivers and single car between the Capitol and the Rayburn House Office Building. From the north wing, the Senate side, take two lines: the first is also provided with drivers and leads from the Capitol to the Russell Senate Office Building. The second, leaderless, driven by electromagnets train runs from the Capitol to the Hart Senate Office Building and the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

The House and Senate stops at the Capitol are connected by a network of tunnels.

The first train ran on 7 March 1909 to join the Russell Senate Office Building to the Capitol. The Dirksen Building in 1954 came to it, and since 1965 also the Rayburn House Building is connected. The last renovation took place in 1994.
