The election campaign

A key issue in the election campaign was the economic situation of the United States, particularly in relation to the labor market (see Labor Statistics of the United States) and the high national debt. Thus the country is struggling with the consequences of the financial and economic crisis. In the population disappointment set over the course of the government, although the severe financial and economic crisis had begun under George W. Bush. As part of this mood, the right-wing populist Tea Party movement profiled.

Effects

From the outcome of the election depended on how much leeway President Barack Obama in the future will have. He lost control of the Senate and House of Representatives, he may, without the previous opposition, the Republicans, in principle, not govern. Theoretically, the two houses and the President can block each other.
