United States Forest Service

The United States Forest Service ( German Forestry Administration of the United States) is a Ministry of Agriculture of the United States under its authority which is entrusted with the management of the National Forests of the United States. She went out in 1905 from the Bureau of Forestry, which in turn was due to a forest protection law (Forest Reserve Act ) 1891 attached as forest office department of the Interior Ministry. The first director was from 1905 to 1910 Gifford Pinchot. With the takeover by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Authority was renamed to its present name, and now manages in addition to the 155 national forests, six national monuments, 20 National Grasslands ( large protected areas in the Great Plains ), as well as 17 national recreation areas (English National Recreation Area ) as z. B. Hells Canyon.

Tasks

The main function of the Forest Service is the forestry use of forests in Federal ownership. These felling licenses to private forestry companies maintain a comprehensive network of forest roads and forest trails and the economic and environmental value of forests detected, monitored and improved. This includes the prevention, early warning and combating forest fires. To this end, published the Forest Service and the Wartime Advertising Council ( Committee for the publication of advertising material for the purpose, to win in wartime recruits for the army) on August 9, 1944 Enlightenment posters that should inform citizens about possible dangers.

In the center of this campaign was a black bear, which was nicknamed Smokey Bear and was for decades a kind of symbol of the United States Forest Service.

The 155 national forests ( National Forests) of the United States are divided into a number of ranger districts in which the so-called Ranger (forest officials ) are responsible for the economic exploitation and biomonitoring of the habitats of plants and animals. The Forestry Commission also has regional research stations, study the ecosystems of the national forests. The Forest Service provides its expertise to private forest owners and the forest departments of the states available, distributed subsidies and maintains technical equipment for private forests ready. The responsible for this department is called State and Private Forestry ( Federal State and Private Forestry ).

Since many national forests are also used for tourism, the Forest Service also cares for the establishment and maintenance of trails and campsites wherever a National Forest explicitly to wilderness area ( Wilderness Area) was declared. It also operates an intensive information and education work in the U.S. after the widespread concept of natural and cultural interpretation ( Heritage Interpretation ).

Since 1978, U.S. presidents have repeatedly National Monuments reported inside existing national forests and the Forest Service transferred the administration. These are:

  • Iceland Admiralty National Monument - Alaska
  • Giant Sequoia National Monument - California
  • Misty Fjords National Monument - Alaska ( the National Monument with the largest area )
  • Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument - Washington
  • Newberry National Volcanic Monument - Oregon
