United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce

The United States House Committee on Energy and Commerce is a standing committee of the House of Representatives of the United States. It was founded in 1795 as the Committee on Commerce and Manufactures, making it one of the oldest committees of the House of Representatives. The current chairman is Fred Upton (R- MI), leader of the opposition ( Ranking Member) is Henry Waxman (D -CA).

Remit

The Committee has one of the most far-reaching duties of all congressional committees. It is responsible for the oversight in the following areas: energy, health care, national and international trade, consumer affairs and protection, biomedical research and development, telecommunications, travel and tourism, drug and food monitoring, and pollution of the environment.
