United States House Committee on Homeland Security
The United States House Committee on Homeland Security is a standing committee of the House of Representatives of the United States. The current chairman is Michael McCaul (R -TX), leader of the opposition ( Ranking Member) is Bennie Thompson (D -MS)
History
The Committee was established on 19 June 2002 of the 107th Congress and initially had only the task of drawing up proposals for the construction of a 2001 Department of Homeland Security in the light of the terrorist attacks on September 11. In the next legislative session ( 108th Congress ), the mandate was renewed as a parliamentary supervision of the activities of the Department was required after the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security. Finally, the Committee became a permanent status on January 4, 2005.
Remit
The House Committee on Homeland Security has, to edit, to approve or reject the task of draft laws relating to the security of the United States. Moreover, the Committee has the right to conduct hearings on security and summon witnesses.
