United States National Cemetery

United States National Cemetery ( National Cemetery of the United States) is the designation for 139 nationally important cemeteries in the United States of America. National Cemeteries are generally, but not always, military cemeteries. They contain the graves of U.S. military personnel, veterans and their spouses and unmarried children. Besides these, there are special State Veteran Cemeteries. Some National Cemeteries, especially Arlington National Cemetery ( Arlington National Cemetery ) south of the federal capital, Washington DC, contain tombs of important civilian leaders and other important personalities. On some, the Confederate soldiers are buried in their own departments.

The National Cemetery Administration of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) manages and maintains 125 of the 139 national cemeteries. The Department of the Army maintains two, the Arlington National Cemetery and United States Soldiers' and Airmen 's Home National Cemetery. The National Park Service (NPS ) maintains 14 cemeteries at historic sites and battlefields.
