The National Radio Quiet Zone ( NRQZ ) is a protection zone of harmful plants in the United States.

It is located in the states of Virginia, West Virginia and a small portion of Maryland and comprises approximately 34,000 km2. The boundaries of the National Radio Quiet Zone are formed by the longitudes 80 ° 30 'W and 78 ° 30 ' W and latitudes 37 ° 30 'N and 39 ° 15 ' N.

The zone was established in 1958 by the Federal Communications Commission. Nearby her institutions of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory ( NRAO ) in Green Bank and the Sugar Grove station of the U.S. Navy Information Operations Command ( NIOC ) in Sugar Grove (West Virginia), now the National Security Agency ( NSA ECHELON network, since April 2013 ).

Operation of radio transmitting equipment (including radio and Wi-Fi) in the National Radio Quiet Zone is severely limited. Mobile phones do not work in the zone. Thus, the electro-smog is reduced, the affected radio reception at the two sites. Specialists take care of the localization of faults and their remedies. Gasoline motors are prohibited in the immediate vicinity of the plants due to the spark plugs.

Reason is the dysfunction of the telescopes. The zone is now, also preferred by people who describe themselves as electromagnetic hypersensitivity as a place of residence.
