United States presidential election, 1808

The sixth election of the President of the United States took place in 1808. James Madison won against Charles Pinckney and George Clinton and became the fourth President of the United States.

Candidates

The Democratic- Republican Party nominee supported by Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Clinton as his running mate. George Clinton also ran for president, his vice would become James Monroe. For the Federalists went Charles Pinckney to Rufus King once again in the race.

Six electors from New York voted unpledged, so against their party line. They denied Madison 's voice and voted for George Clinton. Madison won anyway, which is why the process took no further attention.
