UNIVAC 1103

The UNIVAC 1103, also called ERA 1103 and ATLAS II, was a UNIVAC computer system designed by Engineering Research Associates ( ERA ) and built by Remington Rand in 1953. Among other things, the UNIVAC 1103 by Seymour Cray was designed.

Remington Rand knew not until 1953 that the machine was ever developed. The UNIVAC 1103 was designed in secret for the NSA under the code name Atlas II, and in 1952 delivered. Since the management of Remington Rand did not have a sufficiently high security classification, knew only the directly involved persons of the existence of this computer. 1953 allowed the NSA that the machine could be commercialized under the condition to remove some special instructions from the computing machine. Remington Rand published the machine in 1953 under the name UNIVAC 1103.

Within a short time orders were received from Boeing, Lockheed, NASA and White Sands Missile Range. Remington Rand but had difficulties in the transition to mass production, and all orders were completed too late.

The machine was supplied with the following software:

  • RECO - Assembler System by Remington Rand
  • RAWOOP and SNAP - Assembler System and floating point interpreter of the Ramo - Wooldridge Corporation
  • FLIP - floating point interpreter of the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation
  • CHIP - floating point interpreter of Wright Field
