The University of Calcutta ( Bengali কলিকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, Hindi: कोलकाता विश्वविद्यालय ) is a state university in Kolkata, in the Indian state of West Bengal. With over 100,000 undergraduate students and 5,500 postgraduate students, it is one of the most important universities in eastern India. It was founded on January 24, 1857 after the model of the University of London, making it the first university in India in the modern sense.

In addition to the main sites in College Street, Rajabazar and Alipore, there are other branches in the area of Kolkata, as well as numerous affiliated under the umbrella of the University Colleges. The most prestigious of these is the Presidency College, which was founded in 1817 and since 1855 has this name.

The university is among the best in India.
