The University of Évora (Portuguese: Universidade de Évora ) is a state university in Evora. It has about 6000 students in 17 departments.

History

1559 the second university was founded in Portugal in Evora. It was handed over by Cardinal Henry, the future King of Portugal and Pope Paul IV to the Society of Jesus. During the rule of the Marquês de Pombal, the university was closed as part of the Jesuit expulsion again in 1759. Today's University of Évora was reopened in 1973 as a state university.
