The University of Florida is a public university located in Gainesville, Florida. It is equipped with 49 693 students, the fifth largest university in the United States (2006) and has the eighth-largest budget, nearly 1.9 billion U.S. dollars a year. It is one of the best public universities in the United States, a so-called Public Ivy and is a member of the Association of American Universities, an existing association of leading research-intensive since 1900, North American universities. The university was rated in the 2007 U.S. News & World Report National Universities 47th. In international comparison, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the University of Florida In 2006, the 53rd place.

History

The University was founded in 1905. Officially listed as a founding year 1853, in which the East Florida Seminary was founded. This facility was closed during the Civil War, her name was later used by several other educational institutions.

African American students are admitted since 1958.

After a donation of 20 million U.S. dollars from George Smathers the name of the library of the University in 1991 was changed to George A. Smathers Library.
