The University of Greenland (Danish: Grønlands Universitet, grönl. Kalaallit Nunaata Universitetia, grönl proper name. Ilisimatusarfik ) is outside of Nuuk and is the only university in Greenland. She is a member of the University of the Arctic. Language of instruction is mostly Danish, but also Greenlandic. In September 2006, the university had about 150 students and 14 teachers.

Used to be called Inuit Instituttet ( The Inuit Institute) and received university status in 1989. It is based on the areas of Greenland, the Arctic and North Atlantic.

The university has a budget of 14.8 million Danish kroner and reports to the Directorate of Culture Greenland's state government. The university is economically and legally independent of the universities and the government in Denmark. It has cooperation agreements with universities in Denmark, the other Nordic countries and Canada. From there, lecturers come.

The university is since 1992 the editor of Årsskrift for Grønlandsk culture -og samfundsforskning (annual magazine for Greenlandic cultural and social research ) that appears in Danish, with English summaries.

Institute

There are four institutes:

  • Management ( economics, law, business administration, etc. ) with four teachers and about 55 students
  • Cultural and social history with four teachers and 45 students
  • Greenland philology and Media Studies with four teachers and about 35 students
  • Theology with 2 teachers and 15 students

The University Library contains 20,000 volumes and 125 periodicals on economics, politics, administration: history, anthropology, archeology; Linguistics, literature, media, and theology. The collection can be searched on the Internet.

Building

By 2009, the university was housed in the old Moravian mission of 1738 in Noorliit in Nuuk, which was renovated in 1987. There were also four smaller buildings. Overall, the university had 1,000 m² for administration, faculty offices and seminar rooms.

2009 the University moved to the campus Ilimmarfik, a center for training, research, documentation and mediation.

Recording conditions

The recording conditions require not only high school full language skills in Danish and Greenlandic and advanced level of English. About 25 to 40 students are taken each year. There is also the possibility of hosting of students and single subject students.

Foreign exchange students must be enrolled at another university and have 2 -year study experience. But there are only exceptional instruction in English, and no extra tuition for incoming students. Career Prospects

Due to lack of academics with Greenland and other language skills demand in the Greenlandic economy is high.

Graduates of the University of Greenland usually find work in the central or local government, as a secondary school, in cultural or economic institutions, etc. The theologians are taken from the national church.
