The Universidad de Guadalajara ( UdeG ) is a public university in Guadalajara, Mexico. It is the fourth oldest university in Latin America and the second oldest university in Mexico. Only the UNAM in Mexico City is older and has more students in Mexico.

History

First efforts

The earliest attempts to establish a university in Guadalajara, took place in the late 17th century. On July 12, 1696 Friar Felipe Galindo Chávez y Pineda with King Charles II, the Real Seminario Conciliar de San José sought to raise to the rank of a university. Only in 1750 was carried out with Matías Angel de la Mota Padilla the next effort in this direction, which declared the establishment of a university as a top priority of the city government. But not until 1767, when the Jesuits were banned in Latin America and so that education can largely collapsed, concrete plans were necessary.

Foundation

On December 12, 1775, the local bishop Antonio Alcalde y Barriga responded to a request of King Charles III. , To assess the need for the establishment of a university, and finally received in 1791 the royal order establishing the university.

1821-1924

The Plan of Iguala in 1821, the then Rector Diego Aranda y Carpinteiro swore the independence of the University of the Spanish crown. Since then, the university was the state. By 1924, the university was but always affected by the political turmoil of Mexico's young and was therefore at times even closed.

1925 to today

1925 brought the then Prime Minister Jose Guadalupe Zuno Hernandez young intellectuals to the University to give a new profile to the UdeG. Since then, the University of increasing international recognition pleased.

The DAAD has a cooperation with the UdeG for language assistant at the Language Centre. German is a new degree program at CUCSH.

The Universidad de Guadalajara is one of the most important research institutions in Mexico and plays in many scientific fields, a significant role, especially in medicine and engineering.
