The University of Khartoum (Arabic: جامعة الخرطوم Jami ʿ a al - Khartum ) in Khartoum in Sudan is the main university in the country. It is located east of the business district on the banks of the Blue Nile.

History

1902 was established during the British colonial period, the Gordon Memorial College, which was at first only a primary school. After a few specialized extensions came 1924, the first medical school of Sudan added. 1936, a legal department was founded, in 1947 the University of London was connected.

With the country's independence in 1956 the former College the status was awarded as a university.

Structure

The University of Khartoum has 16,800 students in 23 different faculties, schools and research institutions. Around 3,500 students are added each year, 55 % of them are female.

There are 6,000 graduate students ( M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are on loan ). At the University of 850 lecturers and professors, 20 research colleagues and 500 teaching assistants are employed.

The university includes the mycetoma Research Center.
