University of Maine

The University of Maine (also called UMaine ) is a public university near Bangor in the town of Orono in the U.S. state of Maine. With over 11,000 students it is the main site of the University of Maine System and the largest university in the state.

General

The school is particularly known for its research and teaching in the fields of food science, forestry ( Wood Science ), Engineering, Oceanography, education and economics.

History

The University of Maine was founded in 1865 as Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, and took on its current name in 1897.

Sports

The sports teams are the UMaine Black Bears. The University is a member of the America East Conference.
