The University of Mary Washington (also known as UMW, Mary Washington, or Mary Wash, and 2004: Mary Washington College) is a public university in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The college was founded in 1906.

History

On March 14, 1908, signed Claude A. Swanson, Governor of Virginia, a law for the establishment of a normal school, the Normal and Industrial School for Women. In 1938 the college was renamed " Mary Washington College ". Mary Ball Washington was the second wife of Augustine Washington and the mother of George Washington.

1944 began an association between the university and the renowned, at that time only men open to University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The Mary Washington College served as a " women's college " for the University of Virginia until 1972 also opened for female students. The Mary Washington College had 1970 men also admitted ( coeducation ).

Mid-1960s had been abolished racial segregation at the university.

Infrastructure

The Alvey Hall, named after Edward Alvey, Jr., Chairman of the Faculty from 1936 to 1971 together with the Arrington Hall, the newest building on campus. It is used by students who are in their first year at this school. Both buildings were completed in 1993.

Cultural

The Ridderhof Martin Gallery, is a museum on the campus. Here, in addition to about 5,000 permanent art objects, each year organizes exhibitions, with exhibits from other museums in the United States. The museum is open to the public.

Competitive sports

How common at U.S. universities, in addition to the student grassroots highly qualified student high school teams are promoted to the University of Mary Washington. The University plays in the Capital Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The sports team of UWM is called Eagles.

It is offered at the University, among others, basketball, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming and tennis.
