The University of Mumbai (abbreviated UoM or MU; Marathi: मुंबई विद्यापीठ, Hindi: मुंबई विश्वविद्यालय ) is a public university based in Mumbai. The university is spread over various locations in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. Academic degrees are awarded annually to approximately 1,100 students. At the University also feature world-renowned research institutes such as the Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and the Tata Memorial Hospital. The University is one of the oldest in India. Through its affiliated colleges, the university has over 500,000 students. The Governor of the State Maharahstra is formally the President of the University ( Chancellor ). The management of the University rests with the Vice - Chancellor, Rajan M. Welukar. At the University of Aakash has been developed.

History

The University was founded in 1857 as University of Bombay in what was then British India on the model of British universities. She is one of the three oldest universities in India. 1858 the Jesuit College St. Xavier 's College was affiliated to the University. It was given its present name by a Government Decision of 4 September 1996.

Locations

The university is spread over many locations. The two most important are:

  • Fort Campus ( the founding location in Mumbai)
  • Kalina campus ( in Mumbai): here, especially social sciences and humanities, mathematics, and biotechnology are taught. The Jawaharlal Nehru Library, the largest library in Mumbai, is located on this campus.
