University of New Zealand

The University of New Zealand (1870-1961) ( in Maori: Te Wananga o Aotearoa ) was an organization founded by law, under which all higher education institutions in New Zealand have been combined.

Prehistory

The History of the University of New Zealand was marked by provincial jealousies and rivalries on academic level within the Education Policy class of his time.

A good 25 years after the official founding of New Zealand and the relocation of Parliament from Auckland to Wellington in 1865, the discussion on the establishment of a separate university was spreading. In 1868, finally, a University Foundation Act was passed, which eight scholarships for each study in the UK introduced ( none of which was ever used ) and provided for a country foundation for a future university in the colony itself. The first university in the country would have however liked to see in Wellington.

The Foundation control came in handy in the south to the Scottish educated middle class in Dunedin. Since education for Scottish tradition had a high priority and starting with the Otago Gold Rush in 1861 also plenty of money happened to be present in the box office, they founded a even a foundation, presented her with abundant land and founded on this basis, in 1869 the first and independent University New Zealand, the University of Otago.

Foundation

Always buffeted by the originality of the South and now surprised they tried in Wellington educational policy "outliers" to get back under control. In 1870, then was because you were not ready with the founding of the university in Wellington, to quickly established by law with the New Zealand University Act, the University of New Zealand.

The University of Otago was the University of New Zealand, from the so far existed only the name, subordinate to college and then took in 1871 with a grand opening ceremony and teaching started in Dunedin on. To avoid inferior, followed in 1873 founding of a University College in Christchurch, Canterbury. After many disputes and discussions on the respective different roles, was set in another New Zealand University Act 1874, that the University of New Zealand does not own teaching would have, but as an umbrella organization should only perceive leading and tested functions.

1882 and 1897 came with the Auckland University College Act and the Victoria University College Act two other educational institutions under the umbrella of the University of New Zealand.

After some further changes to the law in the following years was the University of New Zealand in 1961 finally abandoned in favor of a federal university teaching activities. With the Universities Act of 1961 now got all the university colleges by state university and the University of Otago their independence back.

However, this has not stopped the scramble between the leaders of educational institutions, showed to the be best performance-based research university between the University of Auckland and the University of Otago in 2007 publicly guided discussion about the assessment.
