History

The university, founded in 1872 Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania, with the exclusive language of instruction Hungarian, was transferred to the First World War after the cession of Transylvania to Romania under the provisions of the Treaty of Trianon in 1921, to Szeged. After returning Northern Transylvania and Cluj in Hungary as a result of the first Vienna Award, the school wandered back to Kolozsvár. Therefore, a new university was founded as the University between 1940-45 Miklós Horthy in Szeged. The medical schools were finally separated in 1957 from the University of Szeged and recognized as an independent university. In honor of their former professor, rector and Nobel laureate Albert Szent- Györgyi was eventually renamed in 1987 in Albert Szent - Gyorgyi University of Medical Sciences.

The university system was reorganized on 1 January 2000. 1999, the Parliament passed a law on the integration of universities, as a result, the University of Szeged was born. This includes the following previous higher education institutions: the Attila József University, the Medical University " Albert Szent- Gyorgyi ," the College of Education " Gyula Juhász ," the College of Food Industry Szeged, the College of Agriculture in Hódmezővásárhely and the Conservatory.

The Medical and Pharmaceutical Albert Szent - Gyorgyi - center consists of two faculties - the Faculty of Medicine ( with a Department of Dentistry) and the Faculty of Pharmacy. In total, there are 17 pre-clinical and clinical departments 17, 14 clinical and research laboratories.

The main areas of studies and research focuses primarily on the neuroendocrinology, immunology, Cardiovascular Research, neuroscience and gastroenterology.
