University of Yaoundé

The Université de Yaoundé ( University of Yaoundé ) is the largest and leading university in Cameroon. The university was opened in 1962 as the " Federal University of Yaoundé ". It is thus the oldest state university in Cameroon. It was built with the help of French support. 1972 was accounted for as a result of government restructuring from a federal to a unitary state, the " Federal" from the name. In the 1980s, four local campuses were expanded at the university. In the 1990s, the university was overloaded. Designed for 5,000 students studying there 40,000 students. In part, was complaining about corruption in the teaching staff. In 1993 the university was divided in the course of university reform in two universities. Since then, there is the University of Yaoundé I and the University of Yaoundé II ( current President: Jean Tabi Manga).

The reforms were marked by liberalization measures. Among others, it came to the introduction of tuition fees. The reforms triggered a broad-based protest. This lasted from 1990 to 1996 and attracted an unprecedented in the history of Cameroonian wave of violence. This was also characterized by fractures within the student body, which passed along party lines and ethno- regional affiliation.
