Our Walter is a seven-part television series of the German ZDF from the year 1974. Was produced the series of the evangelical film production company Eikon. Premiere date was July 8, 1974. Director was Peter Schubert, wrote the screenplay Heiner Michel. The television series was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize for socially critical television series.

Action

When her son Walter is two and a half years old, tells a doctor the couple Zabel (played by Cordula Trantow and Thomas Bride) with that the boy has the time still known as mongolism, Down syndrome.

The television series depicts the life of Walter and his family over a period of twenty years. Life with a child with a disability designed initially difficult. Kindergartens and schools reject the boy, and Walter must be taught privately. The mother can no longer participate in the family business because she has to care for her son. The father has to the store then give up and Walter's younger sister Sabine feels neglected. Strangers meet Walter with skepticism. Over the years, the Zabel learn but with the situation deal with it, and also Walter learns to get along in the world. A great help is Uncle Gerd, the first in a home for people with disabilities makes its alternative service and specialized later as a specialist on the treatment of children with intellectual disabilities. At the end of the series Walter is 21 years old.

DVD Release

The series was released on June 2, 2006 as a double DVD with FSK for ages 12 years and a total running time of 315 minutes in German ( Dolby Digital 2.0).
