Untereggen

Untereggen is a municipality in the constituency Rorschach in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

Geography

Untereggen located high above Lake Constance in Rorschach and Goldach. The municipality consists of the three parts of the village front yard, Mittlerhof and backyard as well as from some hamlets and isolated farmsteads.

History

Untereggen owes its existence to the connection from Rorschach to St. Gallen, which carried out here from the 9th century. This connection is part of the Camino from Rorschach to Einsiedeln.

Attractions

  • Castle Sulzberg. The castle is now privately owned, built in the middle ages derived from the from Sulzberg (Upper Allgäu ) Men of Sulzberg. The castle came afterwards into the possession of Mötteli family, which is why it is still popularly known Möttelischloss. The castle is also the great castle pond, a popular recreation area.
  • Catholic parish church of St. Mary Magdalene in the front yard. The Baroque church was built in 1784 by Johann Ferdinand Beer style of the Vorarlberg school.
  • Martin Tobel. An imposing gorge on the border to the city of St. Gallen
