Unto Wiitala

Unto Wiitala ( born July 5, 1925 in Kuolemajärvi ) is a retired Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender and umpire, among other things, for Karhu -Kissat Helsinki was active in the SM- sarja 1948-1957.

Career

Unto Wiitala was active in his playing days from 1948 to 1957 for Karhu -Kissat Helsinki in SM- sarja. Because of his achievements, he was three times awarded the Lasse Oksanen trophy - player of the year, and three times as SM- sarja goalkeeper of the year.

After his playing career Wiitala worked on national and international level as a referee, for which he in a row from 1972 to 1975 was named after him Unto Wiitala Trophy as the best referee of the SM - sarja four times. Because of his service to the Hockey Wiitala was finally taken up initially in 1985 as a player in the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame and in 2003 as a referee in the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Internationally

For Finland Wiitala took part in the World Championships in 1949, 1954, 1955 and 1957. In addition, he was in the squad of Finland at the Olympic Winter Games 1952 in Oslo.
