UP M-10002

The UP M- 10002 was in May in 1936 the Union Pacific Railroad (UP ) in service asked, streamlined designed elfteiliger speed locomotive diesel-electric drive for the transcontinental traffic. He was the third streamlined train of UP and at the same time last with a power head in the " fish head " design known from the M -10000 and M- 10001.

Technical description

The vehicle design of the M- 10002 were as in the previously already in 1934 completed by Pullman - Standard M -10000 and M- 10001 patented self-supporting car bodies with a trapezoidal, but almost 1 /4 m to about 2.93 m widened cross-section in riveted lightweight duralumin used.

The Zugspitze of nearly 218 m long train consisted of an engine and a car as a "booster " designated second machine carriage. In contrast to the first two trainsets, however, presented the M - 10002 of the two-piece power head now represents an autonomous drive unit, since he was not firmly connected to the rest of the train on a common chassis, the Union Pacific Consider the M- 10002 A B as their first diesel "locomotive". The following, provided with air conditioning nine car elements, however, ran again on Jakobs trucks and formed a firmly connected articulated tractor unit. The baggage and mail car followed a supply and a kitchen car, a dining car with 40 seats in the restaurant and 17 seats in the lounge area. Four Pullman cars offered a total of 82 beds, distributed among 11 open and 22 " roomette " sections, which could be separated by sliding doors from the central passageway at night, and nine Single / Double compartments with their own toilets and washing facilities. This was followed by a wide-body cars 48 and a final car with 38 seats. In the end of the car, such as the M -10000 and M- 10001 in the windowless " wasps " design that Zugbuffet was arranged with a small galley again.

Unlike the M -10000 and M- 10001 M- 10002 had two machinery. The Electro Motive Company ( EMC ) had for the front power car again a 1,200 hp ( 890 kW) V16 - cylinder Winton 201 -A diesel engine supplied. For the booster in the spring of 1935 developed from the M- 10001 smaller 900 hp ( 670 kW) V12 - cylinder version of the Winton 201 -A came for reuse. Brake compressor, main generator, and the control equipment are arranged in the eight axes of the four bogies electric traction motors derived again from General Electric.

Service history

The origin and history of the use of the third - UP streamlined train M- 10002 is closely interwoven with that of the fourth train M- 10004. In November 1933, the Union Pacific had ordered two eight- car trains and two power cars at Pullman - Standard. Initially it was intended, the night train travelers from the kitchen car from directly operating on the site and to supply the daily train passengers from the buffet at the rear of the train. To avoid conversion as in the M- 10001 even after interim amendment of this service concept, the UP extended in March 1935 its mandate for another two drive units and two dining cars.

As the first of the two trains from this order of the new route of the "City of Los Angeles " certain M- 10002 was completed in April 1936.

City of Los Angeles

One day after the " Super Chief " of the competing Santa Fe launched with the M- 10002 on 15 May 1936, the third Union Pacific streamlined train as a "City of Los Angeles " transcontinental night train service between Los Angeles and Chicago and shortened the driving time to California at 39 hours and 45 minutes. Since the UP east of Omaha had no own tracks, the train was operated to and from Chicago in cooperation with the Chicago and North Western Railway (C & NW). As previously recorded in the 1935 " City of Portland " schedule, only five vehicle blocks per month were initially also possible in the "City of Los Angeles " with only a tractor.

As of December 1937 reversed an upgraded from a three-part EMC E2 new 791 -tonne 14 -car train, alternating with the eleven-part M- 10002 -unit set and doubled the schedule offered by the "City of Los Angeles " in ten monthly trips per direction.

City of Portland / Portland - Seattle Zubringerzug

In August 1938, the M- 10002 was deducted from the "City of Los Angeles " and queued the Schlafwagenelemt " Mormon Trail " in the fourth streamlined train M- 10004, by the "City of San Francisco " service to the "City of Los Angeles " was changed. The resulting shorter M- 10002 took over from March 1939 to August 1941 the circulation of the "City of Portland ".

In October 1941, the UP also ranked the car elements " Santa Anita " and 10403 in the meantime been preserved only as a reserve M- 10004. For the only eight -piece M- 10002 was found between April 1942 and May 1943 again as Zubringerzug on the route Portland - Seattle use. In 1944, as in the M -10000 and M- 10001, the scrapping of the existing war from major aluminum car bodies. The two-piece power head M- 10002 A B was sold for a gas turbine test train in December 1946 at Northrup - Hendy and dismantled in 1947.
