Up is the eleventh studio album by the American rock band REM It was released on 26 October 1998 and was followed by New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

Title list

The songs were written by Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe. For "Hope" also Leonard Cohen is listed as co-author, as was recognized in retrospect that the piece is very similar to Cohen's "Suzanne".

Up was determined differently than the previous keyboards, subdued percussion and very restrained guitars.

After the departure of Bill Berry took to the recordings several drummers whose place one, but without being a permanent member. Up was the first album the band since Green 1988, which missed the top of the charts in the UK.

Reception

Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic wrote, Up sounds even without the guitars by SEM, although SEM wanted to be adventurous and hip. In some ways this was a good thing because it shows that the band have developed their own sound, which is more elastic than many would have predicted. Many of the pieces are " easy to admire but hard to love. " He forgave two and a half stars out of five. With increasing distance from the judgment of music criticism, however, was increasingly positive; so the German edition of Rolling Stone awarded in 2013 to fifteen-year anniversary of the album now five out of five stars.
