In the U.S. the song hit the # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held that position for three weeks. In the UK, Up Where We Belong reached number 7 in the charts of the year 1983.
Awards
Up Where We Belong 1983 was awarded as best film song ( in An Officer and a Gentleman ) won the Oscar. However, the award went to Jack Nitzsche only, Buffy Sainte -Marie and Will Jennings. The singer was not excellent. In addition, the song won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes were also awarded the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in the Pop category.
