Upland South

The names Upland South ( German as: " Southern Highlands " ), and Upper South ( German: "Upper South" ) denote the northern part of the southern states of the United States, these two terms are sometimes interchangeably, partly but used with different shades of meaning:

Under the name of Upland South is understood together with the intervening plateaus, hills and basins mostly the highlands of the southern Appalachians, the Ozarks and the Ouachita Mountains; also called the Piedmont Upland South is often attributed.

The term Upper South, however, usually refers to a number of American states, with the exact definition, however, changed in the course of American history. In the first half of the 19th century, he described the slavery states north of the Lower South - Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware. During the Civil War, however, was understood to Upper South, especially those Confederate states that leaked from the Union until after the attack on Fort Sumter. According to this definition, which is still in use today, including the Upper South Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas, but not Kentucky, Missouri, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.
