UPM (company)

UPM- Kymmene Oyj is a Finnish company that manufactures paper, pulp and wood products. It was created in 1996 through the merger of Kymmene Oy and Oy Repola.

History in Germany and Austria

In 2001, UPM Augsburg took over the paper mill Haindl. Since then, its German locations in Augsburg, Schongau and Schwedt / Oder and the Austrian plant in Steyrermühl member of the UPM Group. Since 1967, Nordland Papier in Dörpen a part of UPM.

On 21 December 2010, UPM announced the acquisition of Myllykoski Corporation and Rhein Papier GmbH. The European Commission approved the acquisition on 13 July 2011 without conditions.

On 31 August 2011, UPM announced the closure of the plants Albbruck and Kouvola and the closure of the paper machine 3 in Ettringen. UPM ceased production of graphical printing papers at Albbruck in January 2012 a final and sold the disused paper mill at the Karl Group.

On January 17, 2013 UPM announced the closure of a further paper machine in Ettringen.

Corporate Structure

UPM is one of the world's leading forest and paper companies. The company is based in Helsinki, Finland. The business activities of the international company focused on magazine and newsprint, fine and specialty papers, converting materials and wood products. From December 2008, the company's structure on the three segments " Energy and Pulp ", " Paper " and " Engineered Materials " has been reduced. In the responsibility of the business unit " Energy and Pulp " includes forestry, wood supply and the timber business. The development and production of bio-fuels is also part of this unit. The " paper" is made from the magazine, fine, specialty, and the newsprint business. The division " Engineered Materials " includes the areas of label materials, plywood, wood -plastic composite materials and RFID.

The company employs around 22,000 people and it has production facilities in 17 countries. In 2011, the Group recorded a turnover of 7.109 billion euros. UPM's shares are listed on the Helsinki stock exchange.

The paper mill UPM Stracel took over in 2013, the Blue Paper SAS, a joint venture of Klingele Group ( Germany ) and the VPK Packaging Group (Belgium ), which plans to produce from September 2013 containerboard there.

Environment

Since late 2009, UPM aims as bio and forest products company to a new position. The products are to be produced from renewable raw materials and be recyclable. Therefore, the company now referred to as " Biofore Company". The term combines the words "organic" and "Forest" (English for forest ) together.

The company is the world's largest user of recycled fiber for the production of graphic papers and is in production on a balance of recycled fibers and wood from sustainable forest management. The latter is ensured by the fact that most of the processed wood according to international standards FSC or PEFC certified. In addition, chain of custody systems are designed to ensure that the wood comes from legal and non-controversial sources.

All pulp and paper mills of UPM have a certified environmental management system according to ISO 14001 and all European locations as well as UPM's pulp mill in Uruguay are also validated EMAS. Up to a plywood mills and sawmills work all ISO 14001 and the Austrian sawmill is EMAS validated. A large part of the paper products has been awarded the eco-label of the European Union.

UPM 2010 received the "Best Innovator " award in the category " Sustainable Innovation Management " for the flooring UPM ProFi deck, an alternative to the wooden planks of terraces and balconies, in which the residues are recycled from the company's own label production.
