Upson County, Georgia
The Upson County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Thomaston.
Geography
The County is located in west-central Georgia, is about 80 km from the border with Alabama and has an area of 849 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Lamar County, Monroe County, Crawford County, Taylor County, Talbot County, Meriwether County and Pike County.
History
Upson County was formed on December 15, 1824 59 County of Georgia from parts of Crawford County and Pike County. It was named after Stephen Upson, a well-known lawyers and politicians at that time.

According to the census of 2000, there were 27,597 people in Upson County. Of these, 452 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 10,722 households and 7,687 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.58 percent White, 27.95 percent Black or African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.30 percent from other races groups; 0.53 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.18 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,722 households out of which 31.7 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.7 percent were married couples living together, 16.9 percent were single mothers and 28.3 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent of all households and 11.6 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.01.
25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 to 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.9 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 31,201, and the median income for a family $ 37,418. Males have a median income of $ 30,484, women $ 20,520. The per capita income was $ 17,053. 11.2 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
