Uranium (III) is an inorganic hydride chemical compound of the uranium from the group of the hydrides.
Production and representation
Uranium (III) - hydride can be obtained by the reaction of the uranium with hydrogen at 150-200 ° C.
The α - form can be obtained by slow reaction below -80 ° C.
Properties
Uranium ( III) hydride is a gray- brown to black solid which is insoluble in water. It reacts with oxygen at room temperature and at 250 ° C with nitrogen. It has a cubic crystal structure with space group Pm3m. It is found in two different modifications, wherein the α - form converts irreversible at 200 ° C in the β - form.
Use
Uranium (III) hydride is used for the preparation of pure uranium powder by decomposition.
