Uranius

Lucius Julius Aurelius Sulpicius Severus Antoninus Uranius was 253/254 Roman rival emperor in Syria.

Uranius Antoninus reigned for nearly a year as a rival emperor Valerian by the Syrian city of Emesa. The only evidence of his reign are some coins with his likeness. Most likely was Uranius Antoninus - even the Byzantine chronicler John Malalas as alleged - the same as the high priest of Aphrodite in Emesa, Sampsigeramos who could fight back the attack of the Sassanian Shapur I ( 253/254 ).

Due to the great uncertainty as to the life and work of Antoninus Uranius it remains controversial whether it can be included at all in the series of Roman emperors. This is suggested, however, that nine different types of coins coined by him are known.
