Urban agglomeration of Montreal

The agglomeration of Montreal (French Agglomà de Montréal ) is an association of municipalities in the south of the Canadian province of Quebec.

It is congruent with one of the 17 administrative regions ( régions administrative ) of the province. In addition, it is the second smallest and most populous region and fulfills the function of a regional county municipality. Seat of administration is Montreal.

The population is 1,958,257 (2011), the land area of ​​498.2 km ², representing a population density of 3930.8 inhabitants per km ². 63.8 % of residents speak French and 22.5% English as the main language.

In the south and east of the agglomeration of Montreal is adjacent to the region of Montérégie, to the west by Laurentides, Laval to the north and Lanaudière.

History

On 1 January 2002, 27 previously independent municipalities on Île de Montréal under the motto " Une île, une ville " ( " An island, a city " ), merged with Montreal. Especially in communities with a high proportion of English speakers was stirring resistance, since this measure was ordered by the provincial government of the separatist Parti Québécois. In 2003, when the Parti libéral du Québec, the government again, she promised to make the merger undone.

In 22 of the 27 former municipalities took place on 20 July 2004 referenda held in 15 municipalities, the separation of Montreal was adopted. It was mainly to municipalities in the western part of the island, but also some enclaves within the city. However, the communities did not get back their full independence, but had to cede to the community association, which was established on 1 January 2006, numerous skills.

The Agglomerationsrat consists of 31 members:

  • Mayor of Montreal ( also President )
  • 15 members of the City Council of Montreal
  • 14 mayors of other municipalities (Dorval and L'Île -Dorval appoint a joint representative )
  • 1 member of the City Council of Dollard- Des Ormeaux

The representatives of Montreal are appointed by the mayor of the city, the mayor of Dollard- Des Ormeaux also appoints one member. Montreal has a total of 16 representatives of the majority of seats.
