Urban of Langres

St. Urban of Langres ( * in sub - Colmier; † ( presumably) January 23, 375 ) was bishop of Langres and Autun in the 4th century.

According to legend, he hid from his pursuers behind a vine. In Christian iconography, he is therefore often depicted with a cluster of grapes or a whole vine in hand. For the same reason, he is also considered the patron saint of winemakers, although this function is often mistakenly transferred to the saints, and Pope Urban I, whose Memorial Day on 25 May, the Urbanstag is.

Urban of Langres is also considered the patron saint of the city of Langres and Dijon.

His feast day is celebrated in different ways: originally the presumed date of death, January 23, later in Langres on April 2, officially on April 3. In many wine regions a Bittprozession will be held on this day of remembrance.
