Urbi et Orbi

Under Urbi et Orbi ( Latin for "the city (Rome) and punish the world " ) refers to the blessing of the Roman Pontiff, the grant of these in a very solemn form at Easter, Christmas and right after his first public appearance as the newly-elected Pope. Formally, it is an Apostolic Blessing. Linguistically, it is a play on words ( Paranomasie ) and a homoioteleuton.

Term

The term Urbi et Orbi evolved from the ancient Roman Empire awareness. It is intended to express the fact that the Pope both Bishop of Rome ( urbs = city; urbi the corresponding dative form; compare: urban ) and is also head of the Roman Catholic Church. Thus, as it were, the whole world ( orbis = globe; orbi the corresponding dative form; compare: Orbit ) includes.

The formula is found more frequently in the language of the Catholic Church, as in the inscription at the Lateran Basilica, after the omnium urbis et orbis this church ecclesiarum mater et caput is: mother and head of all churches of the city and of the globe.

The ritual of the papal blessing Urbi et Orbi developed in the 13th century. Its use is probably on the investiture of the new Pope with the words investio te de Papatu Romano, ut præsis urbi et orbi ("I will clothe thee with the Roman papacy, that you vorstehest the city and the Erdkreise " ) back, the phrase itself can already be found in Ovid: Gentibus est aliis tellus data limine certo: / est urbis et orbis Romanae spatium idem. ( " Other nations have an area with fixed boundaries: Only in the Roman, the city covers the globe ," Fasti II, 684).

The bestowal of blessing

The location of the donation of

Already next to the medieval St Peter's Basilica, there was a benediction loggia to allow the conferral of this blessing to the assembled front of the Basilica pilgrims. Analog devices can be found in other papal basilicas of Rome.

The blessing is now usually given from the loggia above the portals of St. Peter's, which is why this hall is also called benediction loggia. The progressive frailty John Paul II meant that was issued during the last years of his ministry notwithstanding the tradition of blessing right after the show from the altar. Since the election of Pope Benedict XVI. the blessing is again given by the benediction loggia.

In the period from the fall of the Papal States in 1870 until the election of Pope Pius XI. (1922 ) it was customary to take from the loggia to donate outside the blessing of a loggia of the Vatican Basilica into it as a sign of protest against the annexation of the Papal States by the Kingdom of Italy and as an expression of time, thus understood, " Captivity" the Pope in the Vatican.

The form of blessing

The blessing Urbi et Orbi is donated in this form and with this designation only by the Pope. On certain occasions the blessing by cardinals and bishops in his contract may be awarded.
