Urdd Gobaith Cymru

The Urdd Gobaith Cymru [ ɨrð ɡɔbaɪθ kəmrɨ ], literally Welsh League of Hope, usually translated as Welsh Youth League is a youth organization in Wales, the promotion of the Welsh language and culture is dedicated to. It has around 900 local sections and counts more than 50,000 members (as of 2013). The Urdd, the largest youth organization in Wales, organized numerous activities for its members, ranging from small meetings to the Urdd Eisteddfod week.

The Urdd was founded in 1922 by Sir Ifan from Owen Edwards after a call in the children's magazine Cymru'r Plant ( " The Wales of the children "). The first local branch was formed in the same year in Treuddyn ( Flintshire ). 1925 published the Urdd 's first " message of peace and goodwill " of the Welsh youth to the world - a tradition that is maintained annually since then on 18 May. The logo of the Urdd is a three- colored triangle; Green stands for Wales, Red symbolizes the Community and white symbolizes Christ. Fidelity to these three elements form the basis for the motto of the Urdd.

There are three age groups within the Urdd: Elementary to 11 years, High School 11 to 16 years and the Urddaholics 16-25 years. The Urdd is divided into local sections whose catchment areas coincide with those of the Welsh-speaking schools. These groups in turn are joined together in associations in each county. The Urdd organizes sports competitions ( including rugby union, football, athletics, gymnastics and many others) and cultural events. The winners of the local competitions will qualify for regional competitions, and finally for the national finals; in the case of non- sports competitions is the Urdd Eisteddfod.

The aim of the Urdd is primarily to promote the learning of the Welsh language and its use in everyday life. Welcome are both native speakers and Walisischlernende. Simultaneously, the intercultural exchange will be maintained by means of humanitarian actions. The Urdd publishes three magazines which are directed according to age and language skills to specific target groups.
