Urfa Resistance

The resistance of Urfa (Armenian Ուրֆայի հերոսամարտի ) or Urfa Rebellion ( Turkish Urfa İsyanı ) took place against the genocide of the Armenians from 20 September to 20 October 1915 in Urfa place. The resistance under Mgrdich Yotneghparian was put down after the intervention by Germany to the Ottoman allies.

In Urfa, the massacres began in the middle of the month of August. From August 15 to 19 400 people were killed by the Ottoman government forces; also Armenian civilians were deported only in Urfa and then killed.

On May 27, 1915, several hundred Armenians were arrested in Urfa on the instructions of the Ottoman authorities. The community held a meeting in order to agree on a solution to the problem. Mgrdich Yotneghparian and his partisans moved the fight to the death before, instead of yielding to the Ottomans. The Adana Massacre of 1909 had made ​​Yotneghparian increasingly cautious about the new Young Turk government and let his faith dwindle to the new Ottoman Constitution.

Led by Mgerdich took the resistance of the Armenian fighters in the houses heavily fortified sixteen days and was finally only by the aid of a reinforcement contingent of six thousand Turkish troops broken, which were also equipped with heavy artillery.
