Urho Karhumäki

Urho John Karhumäki ( born June 7, 1891 in Multia, † February 26, 1947 in Vihti ) was a Finnish writer and Olympian.

Biography

Urho Karhumäki came in 1891 as the son of a peasant family to the world. When he was 13, the family moved to Saarijärvi, where he read in the public library by one, all books, so including works by Kivi, John Linnankoski and his later favorite author Juhani Aho. After completion of training teachers in 1913 in Jyväskylä finally he worked at the elementary schools in Alavus, Padasjoki and from 1915 in Vihti. There he married in 1916 Elin Ida Sipilä (* 1893 in Hausjärvi ) and got with her four children: Kaari Eliina ( * 1917 in Vihti ), Kauko Juhani (* 1919 in Vihti ), Eero Taavi (* 1923 in Helsinki) and Tuomas Urho ( * 1927 in Vihti ). 1923, the family bought a farm, which they called Sahapelto. The country life was it that significantly influenced his later works.

In 1924 he published his first work Rantasuon sankari, which he wrote within ten days during his recovery from pneumonia. Other works, mostly novels and children's books, but also some plays and short stories that followed. 1936, the novel was Avoveteen (German Outdoor water) at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin awarded the gold medal in the discipline Epic works. It's about Yrjö Niemelä, a young man who moves from one job to the next, until he finds true love and a talented athlete won an international competition as a runner. The book was translated into several languages ​​and as two other works filmed. Yli rajan, a love story, was honored at the International Film Festival in Venice.

Kohumäki 1938 was appointed director of the Literature Association Nuoren Voiman Liitto, the most published books of aspiring writers. The Winter War changed the content of his stories a bit. So Miesten Matkassa describes the war from the perspective of his friend Eemeli Lamminaho.

Karhumäki also wrote under some pseudonyms: Jussi Haukka, Nalle and Tavi Ylämaa.
