Urnäsch is the area the largest municipality in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden.

Geography

Culture and sights

Customs

In Urnäsch the Customs is actively maintained. The best known tradition is the Old New Year January 13, effective date of the Silvesterkläuse appearance.

Each in odd-numbered years is on Carnival Monday, conducted the so-called Bloch Monday, a special carnival tradition: A decorated tree trunk that Bloch is withdrawn from the men of the Bloch society on a cart of Urnäsch to forest instead to Herisau and again, and finally on the Urnäscher village square auctioned by the forester.
