Đuro Pilar

Gjuro Pilar ( also Đuro, Djuro, Georg ) ( born April 22, 1846 in Slavonski Brod, † May 19, 1893 in Zagreb ) was an Austro- Hungarian geologist and mineralogist.

Life

Pilar had by his mother ( Therese Čulić from Derventa ) a strong family with respect to Bosnia.

His education was very extensive. He received the first training in Osijek / Osijek and Zagreb. He visited for the purpose of further studies, the University of Brussels ( 1865, Natural Sciences, Dr. phil., And habilitation ), the Sorbonne (from 1869) and the École de Chimie (1869, chemistry) in Paris. At the end of 1870 he began his work at the National Museum in Zagreb by becoming curator of the mineralogical and geological department.

Pilar founded a ichthyological ( Tertiary and Cretaceous ) and geological collection in the National Museum in Croatia.

He explored on behalf of k.k. Imperial Geological Institute in the 19th century, the geological conditions in Croatia, including in Slavonia ( Požeganer boiler and mountains). His works were characterized by professional diversity. There are topics of general geology, stratigraphy, paleontology, petrography, speleology, seismology and meteorology. His involvement was also taken in 1879 at the geological survey radiograph of Bosnia - Hercegovina from Mojsisovics in claim which found their benevolent support even with the " k croatischen state government ."

From the year 1875 he was professor of mineralogy and geology at the newly founded Croatian Franz -Joseph University of Zagreb (later rector ) and among other things Member of the South Slavic Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb and in other scientific societies of Germany, Switzerland, France and Austria worked.

A comprehensive geological description Bosnia based on their own explorations in 1879, he gives his report to the South Slavonic Academy of Sciences in 1882. Therein are of him next to scarce tectonic and hydrological statements explains the upcoming in the Bosnian part of the country geological systems. In the main part describes the geological conditions of 15 sub- areas. It concludes with some remarks on mineralogical aspects. His results were already Edmund of Mojsisovics to describe western Bosnia, which was accompanied by the young Pilar traveling through the country.
