Uroplatus

Uroplatus sikorae sameiti

The leaf -tailed geckos (English: leaf -tailed gecko ) or Flat-tailed geckos ( Uroplatus [Greek: uro = tail; Platus = flat ] ), also called Uroplaten, 8 to 30 centimeters large nocturnal lizards. Their color is usually green to brown, but ranging up to complete black. Also red and bluish swab drawings have been observed. A special feature is the eponymous leaf-shaped, flat tail, which is found in all species. Uroplatus has the typical for nocturnal reptiles slit-like pupils.

Spend the day most species well camouflaged on branches lying flat ( mimesis ), rarely also in hollow trunks or foliage. Uroplatus have adhesive toe that allow the animals to find themselves on glass support. In addition, leaf-tailed geckos have small retractable claws that provide extra security on vertical surfaces.

Dissemination

Leaf-tailed geckos are endemic to Madagascar and its surrounding islands. The animals inhabit both lower, forested coastline and high mountain regions.

Attitude in captivity

Leaf-tailed geckos are delicate Pfleglinge in particular, due to climatic demands and belong only in the hands of experienced keepers. Some species require night temperatures well below 20 ° C. The reproduction is more likely to be quite complicated, offspring succeed with the right attitude but regularly. As Eiablageort usually serves the leaf litter on the ground, but occasionally leaf axils or cave hideouts. Since the Flat-tailed geckos are endangered in the wild, they are listed in full in Appendix 2 of the CITES Convention. In 2006, the export of these animals from Madagascar was almost completely set.
