Urrea de Gaén

Urrea de Gaén is a municipality ( municipio ) with 491 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) in the district of Bajo Martín Teruel province of the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain. It is the smallest municipality for his drum processions during Holy Week ( Semana Santa ) famous Ruta del Tambor y el Bombo.

Semana Santa

The Semana Santa in Urrea de Gaén is compared to other places in the Ruta del Tambor ( Alcaniz or Calanda ) quiet and solemn. The most important events of Holy Week are taking place at midnight between Holy Thursday and Good Friday Romper la hora ( hour smash ) and the subsequent processions. From that moment on until Holy Saturday by 20 clock is continuously tumbled by large groups. The most important processions are from 0:30 clock on Good Friday the rosary procession around the events of Jesus' arrest at Gethsemane and on the evening of the same day by 21 clock the procession to the burial of Jesus. On Holy Saturday, a procession is held for the so-called Calvary by 11 clock.

Infrastructure

Urrea de Gaén has not a hotel. The next overnight accommodations are located in the neighboring communities Híjar, Albalate del Arzobispo and La Puebla de Híjar. The village has two pubs, two grocery stores, two butchers, a bakery, an electrical goods shop, a hairdressing salon, a clothing store ( with tunics for the Semana Santa ), a pharmacy, a bottle shop and a bank branch.

Sons and daughters of the town

Urrea de Gaén is the birthplace of the physician, philosopher and writer Pedro Laín Entralgo, who in 1908 was born there. He was president of the Real Academia de la Lengua Española. His birthplace is located on the central Plaza de España.

Also, the Carlist General Juan Cabañero y Esponera was born here. He is best known as the commander of a failed attack on Saragossa on March 5, 1838, in whose memory the festival in the Cincomarzada is celebrated in the capital of Aragon today.
