Urschenheim

Urschenheim ( Els Ürsche, IPA: [y ː rʃə ] ) is a commune of 700 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Alsace region in the department of Haut-Rhin. The village lies in the canton Andolsheim is a member of the Association of Municipalities Pays de Brisach.

Geography

Urschenheim located approximately 10 kilometers east of Colmar and 8 kilometers north-northwest of Neuf- Brisach in the Upper Rhine Plain, approximately 5 km from the Rhine. The very flat district has only 5 meters height difference.

Neighboring municipalities are (from north clockwise) the lying also in Canton Andolsheim places Muntzenheim, Durrenentzen, Kunheim, Widensolen and Fortschwihr.

History

Urschenheim itself was first mentioned as 817 Uratesheim. The spelling of the name then changed over time, so the place is mentioned as 987 Uresheim, 1318 and 1639 as Ursheim as Urszheim.

The place was of 1325 until the French Revolution in 1789 in the possession of the diocese of Strasbourg. In the second half of the 17th century changed the course of the policy of conquest of Louis XIV, the supremacy of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in France.

The Thirty Years' War to, according to the chronicles have survived only five people in the place. The place was then re- populated by immigrants from the wider region, including Switzerland. The then newly created land register of 1657 is still in the village archive.
