Etymology

The name Urspringen is based on a plural form of Middle High German word ursprinc. This refers to the sources of Grummibaches, which rises in the city and empties into the Karbach.

History

The village name is attested in 1159 for the first time in a document as " Urspringen ". The former Office of the County of Castell, which lay in the Frankish Empire Circle from 1500, fell after the mediatization (1806 ), finally in 1810 by border adjustments to the Grand Duchy of Würzburg, with which it finally became part of Bavaria in 1814.
