In the original form of the Compagnia di Orsola Community of Saint Ursula ' lived the members according to the evangelical counsels: poverty, chastity and obedience, but without public vows. They continued to reside in their families or in their workplace, met regularly to worship, prayer and religious training, and also continue to contribute ordinary everyday clothing. The Community's objective was to strengthen each other in the religious life and to encourage others to their way of life by living the gospel. This was not associated with a specific task. The " Compagnia di Orsola " was thus the first Secular Institute of Church history.

For this community Angela Merici wrote a rule that the first independent rule a woman for women. The management of the Community took over the women themselves; it was provided no line office for a priest.
