Uruapan ( officially: Uruapan del Progreso ) is a city in the Mexican state of Michoacán, and one of the oldest cities in Mexico at all.

Geography
Location
Uruapan is located at an altitude of 1634 meters. The closest cities are Morelia ( 102 km) and Patzcuaro (52 km).
History
The name comes from the Tarascan ulhupani translated it means: place where the trees always bear fruit. The truth about the state of establishment are historically not longer be reconstructed, the founding of the city but Friar Juan de San Miguel attributed in 1536. However, it has been found in the region of several archaeological sites, one of which with the exception of Lienzo de Jucutacato not yet been developed. The original population Urupanas was Christianized during the colonial period in each case by the Franciscan monks. During this time Uruapan could grow rapidly especially due to its fertile soils.

The municipality is 315 350 people ( as of 2010), of which more than two thirds of the city. Uruapan is very rural in particular through the flowering avocado cultivation.

In the region around Uruapan especially avocados are produced. Almost all avocados sold in the U.S. come from the region around Uruapan. In addition, however, many countries continue to be delivered.
