The Uruguay River (Portuguese Rio Uru-guay ) is a river in South America, which together with the Paraná the Río de la Plata.

The name means something like flow of the colorful bird. It is 1790 km long and rises in the southern Brazilian highlands, in the state of Santa Catarina. It forms in parts the border between Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, then it forms the border between Argentina and Brazil. From El Soberbio somewhat further upstream the 2km long Salto Yucuma forms. This unique runs parallel to the river in the world. The last 300 km of the Uruguay forms the border between Argentina and the State of Uruguay, which takes its name from the location to this river derived ( Eastern Republic of Uruguay). A total of 13 found in this last part of section to Uruguayan side in the 19th century in connection with the struggle for independence, the country built fortresses. Some of these are now used after implementation of restoration as a museum.

Navigable the Río Uruguay is to Paysandú, which is significantly less far than his "twin flow " Paraná, since he has a lot more rapids. The catchment area is 297,199 km ² in size.
