Urzhum, Urzhumsky District, Kirov Oblast

Urzhum (Russian Уржум ) is a town in Kirov Oblast in Russia. It has 10,213 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and 195 km south of the regional capital Kirov away.

History

Originally located at the site Urschums settlements of Mari. 1584, the town was founded as a Russian fort, which was named after the river Urzhum Urschumka. The location of the resort between Siberia and European Russia there flourished on trade. 1796 received Urzhum the city status. In the 19th century there arose several churches and other historic buildings that have been partially preserved, as well as the industry developed in the county.

Even today Urzhum an important center of agriculture. There are also a number of industrial enterprises in the city for wood processing, food and building materials.
