US-KMO

The SPRN -2 Predictors program ( often referred to briefly as forecasters ) is a Russian missile early warning program based on geostationary early warning satellites.

It is intended to complement the satellites of the Oko - series and is completely independent forecasters over the older -SO- M program ( this was a civilian project to explore the terrestrial magnetosphere ). The first prototype was launched on 8 October 1975, a Proton-K/DM-2-Trägerrakete, but this blew up in orbit. Since the start of the final satellite on 26 June 2008 sixteen satellites have been put off from Baikonur on a Proton rocket into orbit, always two satellites are actively in use. One at 24 ° West and 12 ° East on. In addition, always be two backup satellites at 80 ° East and 12 ° East in reserve. The approximately two-ton built by Lavochkin satellites will be launched under the codename cosmos.
