US Open Series

The U.S. Open Series is a series of current total of ten tournaments on the ATP and WTA tour, which covers the six weeks before the U.S. Open. In preparation for the Grand Slam tournament in New York all tournaments will be played on similar coverings such as at Flushing Meadows. Therefore, this series is also called the North American hard court season.

The U.S. Open Series was launched in 2004 to give the smaller American tournaments a bigger television presence.

Players can collect in the course of the series points lead later according to their performance at the U.S. Open to a higher prize payout. So Kim Clijsters won in 2005 by her victory in both the series and in Flushing Meadows 2.2 million U.S. dollars in prize money, the hitherto highest total in the women's sport. Roger Federer won two years later, also by this double success at the U.S. Open a total of 2.4 million U.S. dollars. Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal set in 2013 by winning the U.S. Open Series and the subsequent U.S. Open with a prize money of 3.6 million U.S. dollars each a new record prize money in professional tennis on.

Points system since 2008

Players must participate in at least two tournaments in the U.S. Open Series to be considered for a top 3 place in the overall standings of the series.
